Kieron Dyer says more about West Ham than it at first seems.

Talking candidly about his career, talking to a Geordie so obviously Newcastle-centric but also about 'the best captain' he ever played under, Lucas Neill at West Ham, Craig Bellamy and his mental health issues,his great pal Lee Bowyer and all sorts.
I found it a good watch because it pertains to life under Curbishley and the most devastating front two we had but just didn't happen due to injuries.
A fit Dean Ashton and Craig Bellamy (a player who loved our club and never wanted to leave) I only ever saw play together once, away at Ipswich in a friendly in a situation we all became familiar with, us two-nil up after twenty minutes with the opposition shitting themselves at our two unplayable forwards when one of them (Bellamy?) went off injured.

Well, I do know Dicks’ knee was 100% down to our medical staff’s mismanagement of it. No idea about Hall or Whitbread though. I just can’t remember.
You’d hope that wasn’t the case with Faubert. Obviously not with Dyer given the nature of his initial injury but he was managed pretty badly afterwards.
So yup, could argue a little more than bad luck with a few. Then again in the 90s or thereabouts, injuries which are now 9 months out and good as new used to be basically career Enders.

Yea funny that, players at other clubs get bad injuries and come back, but when it happens to us it finishes them. All very odd :-)

Agree. We have had a ridiculous habit of rushing players back in the past, only for them to immediately re-injure themselves. Fortunately we seem to have gotten smarter in recent years.

Whatever you think of Dyer as a person, I can't help but think our medical team weren't exactly on the ball with him.
How many times did he start a game after being off for a month or so only to hobble off within the first twenty minutes?

Yup. All about speed which is why we bought him. Just like Adama Traore. No way is he a top flight player if he doesn’t have the pace he has.

Faubert was a terrible footballer, injury or not.
Still had the pace to get in down the flank, but possibly had the worst final ball I've seen in a winger. Atrocious crosser.

Dyer had missed games in his career but wasn't genuinely injury-prone, I'm sure. The horrific leg break is what changed/ruined everything for him.
Faubert did his achilles, IIRC?
Ljungberg was more of a gamble as he had been getting more injuries, I think.

I think that it was a case of Magnusson wanting to run before he could walk and Curbs didn't have the experience with that kind of money. To be fair I suspect most of us saw the names that were coming in and thought that they would be great, and then realised they weren't! A fit and younger Ljungberg would have been a great signing I suspect. Faubert was a strange one but didn't he fracture an ankle early on himself? We don't have much luck with injuries ripping players careers apart.

Can’t really blame Dyer for getting a bloody terrible leg break courtesy of a terrible challenge by a Bristol rovers/city clogger in one of his first games for us. Never the same after that as a player or fitness wise.

What a terrible signing he was. Curbishley was given spending power to rival the top six clubs, and spent it on Dyer, Ljungberg and Faubert. I’ll give him Parker and Bellamy. With all that money, he turned us into a mediocre mid-table side, the cried when the money ran out and we had to sell, then quit and sued the club for millions when they were heading for administration. What a club legend!

I remember a newcastle fan joined maybe this forum or KUMB and said they cannot wait to sell Dyer to us etc.
I think we all knew what would happen also with him.

I think he may have been, Willtell - I've told this on here before, but I was in a box at UP when a member of the hospitality staff popped in and asked if someone could go and answer a question for people in the box next door. I was nearest so off I went - and it was Dyer and his mates. They were arguing about the name of the stadium - his mates said it was 'Upton Park' and Dyer said it was 'the Boleyn Ground'. I was really impressed that he'd taken the time to know, because I bet most players don't. He really seemed to know what he was talking about with what he was saying to them. Although to be fair he had a lot of spare time to learn!
He seemed like a good egg anyway.
